3 Tips for Packing Light

1. Bring less than you think you'll need - This concept may be a little scary, but try to focus on the "I will definitely need" items over the "I may want" items. Make a strict list of what you will definitely need based on weather and planned events -- and respect the list! Avoid any last-minute, panicked overstuffing of your already-full suitcase. Also, two pairs of shoes. That's it.

2. Shop strategically - Invest in durable, low maintenance basics in neutral colors and wrinkle-resistant fabrics. Look for garments that you can wear multiple times for multiple purposes, such as a convertible dress or a quality t-shirt that can be dressed up or down. Items that can be washed in the sink and dried in the tub overnight are very worth the price. Be prepared by bringing your own soap, sink stopper and clothesline.

3. Have a plan - The bulk of your luggage should be the aforementioned neutral basics, preferably in darker colors to hide wrinkles and the occasional wine spill. If you care about adding a little interest to your outfits, pack some fun accessories (but keep in mind that open markets are always great for picking up interesting jewelry and scarves during your travels). Plan your outfits ahead of time to make sure you have all that you need -- then cut out anything that can't be worn in at least two ways.
